Switch without downtime

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

1. Signup for Web Hosting

The first step is to signup for web hosting with new web hosting provider. This will allow you to start transferring information between your old host and your new host. Make sure that you do not cancel your account with your current web host, until your site has been transferred successfully.

2. Configure your Control Panel

Once your web hosting account has been created with the new web hosting provider, you may receive a welcome email with your account information; this is normally done by all hosts. Your first task is to set up your email addresses, so they match your current email addresses, using your control panel. This will ensure your email is received correctly when you switch hosts.

3. Upload your web site

Download your current web site from old web host, into a folder on your computer. (if you have a recent copy of your web site on your computer, this will also suffice.)

Next, you will need to upload your web site using FTP (File Transfer protocol). Your FTP information can be found in your welcome email, as well as several FTP clients you can use. Most website building programs like Frontpage, GoLive and Dreamweaver have built in FTP functions. Alternatively you can use any ftp program available on the web, or use Windows file explorer.

Connect to your web space via FTP using the credentials in your welcome email. Copy/upload your web site to the web space. Most times, it is a simple case of dragging the files from your desktop into the directory indicated above.

Please place your home page file in the directory as instructed in the welcome email. The file is normally named index.htm, index.html, index.php, etc, so that it will load automatically when someone accesses your web site.

You can test your web site by using the temporary URL normally provided by the web hosting providers.

4. Change domain DNS settings

Next, you will make your domain name point to your new web site hosted on the new web hosting providers’ servers. To do this, you will need to update your domain name DNS details at your current domain name registrar. Every registrar has a different procedure, so it is best you contact them or use their online management systems.

It is vital that you change the DNS settings of your domain name, so that your domain name points to the new hosting providers servers (where your email, web site, etc is stored). If you do not change the DNS settings of your domain, your domain will still point to your old web host.

5. Wait for domain DNS settings to propagate.

After you have updated your domain name with our DNS settings, it will take up to 72 hours for these changes to propagate around the internet. During this time, people who access your domain name may reach your old web site hosted from your old provider or your new web site hosted with the new hosting provider. Ensure both web sites stay online for 72 hours, so the end user will always reach your web site.

Once your domain name DNS settings have fully propagated, your web site and email will be solely hosted from the new hosting servers and you are free to leave your old hosting provider.

Dedicated web server

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

A dedicated web server is type of web hosting where the client leases or rent an entire server not shared with anyone. With a dedicated web server the client is at liberty to install whatever third party software they desire, which suits their requirements for doing their mission critical business. Dedicated web server clients do not share their resources, as those with shared web hosting packages do; but rather, are at liberty to use all the resources available to them. There are mainly two types of services provided by the dedicated server providers they are Managed dedicated servers and other is unmanaged dedicated servers.

A managed dedicated web server is generally more proactively monitored and maintained on the part of the dedicated web server service provider. When renting or leasing a managed server, the service provider or web host carries out the responsibility of third party software updates and patches, putting security measures in place, performing hardware replacements, and also monitoring the network and its connection for trouble.

An unmanaged dedicated web server leaves nearly all the management duties of running a server in the clients control. The customer in this case, updates third party software on their own, applies necessary patches, performs kernel compiles and operating system restores, installs software, and monitors security. With this type of dedicated web server, the consumer is responsible for regular operations and maintenance of the web server. The dedicated web server service provider monitors the network, repairs hardware problems, and troubleshoots connectivity issues.

Web hosting - support levels

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

In the web hosting industry, support technicians are divided in to main three levels — Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. We have defined the levels below:

Level 1 Support

Level 1 support technician is a front line support for end users, with a minimal experience. When an end user contacts for technical assistance, a level 1 technician tries to answer all questions, which might include help with simple problems or general “how-to” questions. If the question is more complex, the user is passed on to the level 2 technician.

Level 2 Support

Level 2 support technician has minimum one or two years of expereince in web hosting support. The complex questions are passed to Level 2 technicians by the Level 1 support technicians. Level 2 questions may, for example, deal with advanced features and internals. If the level 2 technician cannot help to the user, a level 3 technician is consulted by the level 2 technicians. The issue is escalated to the level 3 queue.

Level 3 Support

Level 3 is the best expereinced and certified system administrator. The level 3 technician research and investigate about the issue and then solve the queries. The level 3 is a very well experienced administrator who handles all complex issues, and resolves them timely.

File Transfer Protocol

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

FTP means File Transfer Protocol. This protocol is used to transfer files from your computer’s hard drive to a remote server, such as any web hosting server. You would use FTP to upload (or send) your web page files (contents) you make on your computer to your web space provided by any web hosting company.

To use FTP, you will need an FTP program. There are many out there such as CuteFTP, SmartFTP, and FileZilla. You will need to set up the FTP program with your domain’s FTP host name, username and password. This information is sent to you by your web host. Once you have your FTP program set up, you can then upload files to your web space so that the public can view your web site.
